Delacroix Narration: Walking down Parisian streets in cool October air, Liszt broke out the question that he found hard to utter.

Liszt: Chopinsky-*turns to Chopin*-do you have…plans in the evening a week from today?

Chopin: *Turns and looks at Liszt with curious eyes* No, I don’t believe so.

Liszt: Oh…well…that’s great. *Smiles* Marie is hosting a dinner party, with mainly her close friends and mine; we would be honoured if you could come.

Chopin: *Smiles back* Thank you for inviting me; I would love to go.

Liszt had hoped Chopin would decline and be saved from the wrath of Madame Sand, but it seemed a meeting with George was inevitable. Liszt sighed softly and hoped Chopin would send a note last minute apologizing for his inability to come to the party due to any inconvenience. He enjoyed his friend’s company extremely; however he couldn’t help but worry for Chopin’s welfare should George Sand force her hands into his life.

Liszt’s wish went unanswered as he idly entertained the guests of Marie’s party and received no last minute notes from his Chopinetto. A few moments after he pondered about the Polish man, Chopin arrived, dressed humbly for the evening festivities, and raised his small hand, waving lightly, upon catching Liszt’s attention.

Liszt’s eyes shifted to the gloves; Chopin wore the pair he gave him.

Liszt: *Walks over to Chopin* Good evening, dear friend. *Embraces Chopin, holding him tightly*

Chopin: Good evening, Franz. *Embraces back*

Liszt: *Leans back from the hug, but an arm lingering around Chopin’s shoulder as he leads Chopin into the room* You are wearing the gloves I gave you; hoping to charm the ladies tonight? *Smiles teasingly*

Chopin: *Laughs* With you here I need all the assets I can acquire to increase my chances.

Liszt: *Pats Chopin on the back* You flatter me, monsieur! I’d say you are quite popular with women!

Chopin: *Looks at Liszt with a smile, eyes glittering and gazing into Liszt’s deeply* There will be no need for that popularity as my heart is already enchanted by my love.

Liszt: *Blinks as Chopin continues to gaze into his eyes*

As Chopin expressed his love for his Polish fiancé, Liszt couldn’t help but feel a fluttering in his heart as the fellow pianist stated his confession with such warm eyes, all the while staring into Liszt’s own. Liszt felt silly, but the way Chopin uttered those words while looking into him caused warmth to spread throughout his body. It was as if - Liszt almost laughed out of embarrassment - it was as if Chopin had said those words to him.

And strangely, he felt no repulsion towards that idea.

*Marie notices Chopin standing with Liszt and approaches the duo*

Marie: Monsieur, *Curtseys* I’m happy to find you here. *Holds out her hand*

Chopin: Madame, *Takes her hand, bows and kisses it* I’m glad to have been invited.

Marie: *Smiles charmingly, before turning to Liszt* Franz, a word please?

Liszt: *Turns to Chopin* I will be back in just a minute. *Follows Marie*

Marie: *Tugs Liszt into a less populated spot in the room* *Whispers* Franz, have you seen George?

Liszt: *Frowns* No, I haven’t. She still hasn’t arrived?

Marie: *Looks bewildered* I was certain I saw her, but I have not a clue as to where she went.

Before Marie’s statement even fully concluded, a small commotion drew the attention of everyone in the room towards it.

Speaking of the devil, there was George Sand, with a large cigar in hand, rubbing the back of a viciously coughing Polish man, who peevish tried to jerk away from the offending hand.

George took another drag of her cigar, eyebrows lifting in confusion, and blew out another puff of smoke, all the while trying to calm Chopin’s vicious coughs.

Chopin swatted the smoke away, and, coughs picking up once more, pushed himself away from the woman dressed in trousers towards the window.

*Liszt, wiping a hand across his forehead in disbelief, walks swiftly towards George Sand*

Liszt: *Approaches Sand* What were you thinking?!

Sand: I was just talking to him! *Motions with her cigar* And then he just started coughing like he’s caught the plague!

Liszt: *Puts his face in his hands* You are a smart woman, George, I have no doubts about that, but have you noticed ANYONE smoking in this room? That man-*motions with a hand towards Chopin standing by the window* -can die from such extreme irritation.

Sand: *Looks a little guilty*…I was wondering why you didn’t have your cigar out.

Liszt: *Sighs* *Turns away and goes to Chopin*

Chopin: *Taking deep, shaky breaths by the open window*

Liszt: *Puts his arm around Chopin’s shoulders* Are you alright?

Chopin: *Looking down* No…No…my coughs have subsided, but I am embarrassed.

Liszt: I’m sorry, Frederyk. George Sand…she is rather thoughtless at times.

Chopin: *Head snaps up* She?! That was a woman?!

Liszt: …well-

Chopin: *Disbelief and anger in his hushed voice* Is she truly a woman?! I’m inclined to doubt it!! Cigars and trousers…and CIGARS! She all but blew smoke right in my face! *Turns away again, taking deep breaths once more*

Liszt: *Sighs* *Notices Marie approaching*

Marie: *Speaks softly* I am incredibly sorry, Monsieur Chopin. Is there anything you would like to help calm you?

Chopin: I-It’s not your fault, Madame, but that revolting abomination’s. *Head still lowered, voice soft*

Liszt: *Addresses Marie* Perhaps some water.

Marie: *Smiles and nods, before turning away*

Sand: *As Marie passes her* He’s got quite a temper, hasn’t he? A temper of a five-year-old little girl.

Marie: Well, I don’t know George, *Looks at Sand* you did almost kill him.

Sand: *Looks away and sulks*

Marie: *Pats her head* Be good George, and try not to do more harm; looking on the bright side, you definitely left an everlasting impression on that one. *Tosses a look back to Chopin*

Sand: *Ignores her statement*

Marie: *Gives a short laugh and turns away to get water*

Sand: *Watches Marie leave* *Turns her head to Chopin and Liszt*

*Scene closes with Sand watching Chopin and Liszt, as Liszt’s arm still hugging Chopin close to him*
